Solar Diamond FAQs

What are Solar Diamonds?

Solar Diamonds are diamonds that are grown using the natural light of the sun. They are fully eco-friendly, renewable and sustainable and are chemically identical to natural diamonds with the same level of hardness (MoH 10) and the same refractive index or brilliance.

How are Solar Diamonds different from regular lab grown diamonds?

Solar Diamonds and lab grown diamonds are both created in a laboratory setting using either intense pressure or intense heat to create a diamond in a matter of days and months, rather than over years and years.

The key difference is that whilst most lab diamonds do not necessarily disclose the source of energy they use, with Solar Diamonds you can be assured that your diamond was grown using only fully sustainable and renewable energy sources.

We believe that lab-grown diamonds from a preferred provenance and limited supply, such as Solar Diamonds, will prove a better source of retained value than the majority of lab grown diamonds in years to come.

How do Solar Diamonds compare to natural diamonds or gemstones?

Apart from their provenance, Solar Diamonds are identical to natural diamonds to the naked eye.

Unlike natural gemstones and diamonds, Solar Diamonds are created using a scientific process under laboratory conditions that is powered by solar energy and sunlight rather than being mined from the earth.

This has various different advantages and disadvantages in terms of responsible sourcing. Whilst Solar Diamonds have no carbon footprint and do not disturb the environment, they also do not create the same local beneficiation that natural gemstones and diamonds do in the communities that make a living from sourcing them.

At Fenton we will continue to offer responsibly sourced natural gemstones and diamonds that meet our rigorous standards for ethical production. We recognise that there is a place for both man-made and natural jewels in the industry as we look forward and are committed to bringing customers the best within each category so they can make informed and conscientious decisions.

Are Solar Diamonds as strong as natural diamonds?

Yes, a Solar Diamond has identical chemical properties and characteristics to a natural diamond and will last with the same durability over time.

Are Solar Diamonds rare?

According to our research, Solar Diamonds and other lab-grown diamonds that are grown using fully renewable natural sources of energy including wind and hydro power make up less than 5% of the total offering on the market currently. We are proud to be at the forefront of sharing the true green potential of this scientific advancement with our customers.

How do their prices and value compare to natural diamonds?

We are thrilled to be able to offer Solar Diamonds at a far lower price for the same carat and quality compared to natural diamonds and to bring a newfound degree of responsible choice to the customer in this sector.

Solar Diamonds undercut their natural counterparts by up to as much as 4x and allow customers to choose a beautiful, timeless piece that will last for generations for between half and a quarter of the price of a natural equivalent.

We recognise that the pressure and expectation around engagement rings can tarnish what should be a period of pure joy for a happy couple and are committed to always finding ways to offer exceptional value for money without compromising on quality.

We do caution our customers that lab grown diamonds are a newer customer proposition and as such do not yet have as established a resale market as natural diamonds. Having said this, the resale market for natural diamonds and gemstones is highly variable and we do not recommend that customers purchase fine jewellery with a view to resell it at a profit in the short term.

Are natural diamonds bad/are Fenton opposed to natural diamonds?

We embrace both natural and Solar Diamonds as well as natural gemstones for the reasons detailed above. In brief, we think that as long as brands are responsible in choosing which countries of origin, suppliers and manufacturers they work with, each can have a positive place in the jewellery ecosystem.

Which countries are you sourcing from?

We are sourcing directly from suppliers in India, the US and Israel.

Why GH VS quality?

We have always used GH VS quality diamonds in line with other luxury jewellery houses as it’s the best combination C’s to have a beautiful, colourless diamond with no visible inclusions that still gives good value for money rather than spending part of your budget on quality factors that will never be seen with the naked eye.

Why are you using ct weight instead of names like ‘Original’?

We are using carat weight as an industry standard to make it easier for our customers to compare our offering directly with other brands if they so choose. Whereas coloured gemstones all have different levels of density which can make carat weights a confusing comparable metric, diamond carat weights are easier to compare. We have a small tolerance limit so you might get a little more than the stated carat weight when placing your order but never less!

Why are the lead times longer than sourcing natural gemstones?

Whilst we can source some Solar Diamonds that already exist, in some cases we will be growing your diamond especially for you! Growing your diamond takes between 6 and 8 weeks and the finished piece still needs to be perfectly cut, polished and set to our exacting quality standards so please be patient while we create a little piece of eternity.

If you are looking for Christmas 2022 delivery please get in touch at your earliest convenience and we will discuss your available options.

Can I have a ring with all Solar Diamonds, including the accent stones?

Right now we can offer responsibly sourced natural diamond accent or pave band stones as an alternative to our gemstone accent stones, please get in touch if you would like to discuss further as our team would be delighted to help.
