Bhathiya - Sri Lankan Gemstone Miner

Tell us about yourself. Where do you live? What do you like doing in your spare time?

Hi, I’m Bhathiya. I live in Rathnapura, Sri Lanka with my wife and children. In my spare time I am usually spending time with my family and the gods.

What does your work mean to you?

I have worked in the gemstone industry for over 8 years, and my wife’s family have been a part of this industry for over 100 years. I love that every gemstone is so unique, and finding one is the result of both hard work and luck! Each individual gemstone brings me joy, as they are so beautiful and special.

What does a typical day for you look like?

On a typical day I will be working with my team at the river to collect gravel from the river bed and sorting through this to discover the beautiful sapphires. We still use the same traditional methods of mining which have been used for centuries to avoid disrupting mother earth. We also actively invest in giving back, and in 2019 we planted over 1,000,000 trees.

What is your favourite gemstone to work with and why?

My favourite gemstone is the Ceylon Blue Sapphire. It is deeply rooted in Sri Lankan history, dating back as far as the 4th and 5th centuries.

Nisha - Office Administration Manager

Tell us about yourself. Where do you live? What do you like doing in your spare time?

Hi, I’m Nisha. I live in Mumbai with my husband and my daughter. In my spare time I am usually pretty busy spending time with them, and taking care of our home. I also love doing some self pampering!

What is your role at Fenton and what does it involve?

My role at Fenton is Office Administration Manager and I have worked here for around two years now.

What does your work mean to you?

Work is very important to me. Not only does it allow me to support my family, it also gives me the opportunity to think differently, and beyond the daily routine.

What does a typical day for you look like?

Everyday is different at Fenton. I most love when everyone can be in the office working together, on crafting our beautiful Fenton rings. It makes me happy to be surrounded by other people and to hear their thoughts and ideas. It is always important to me to ensure everything we do is accurate, and will be loved by our customers.

What is your favourite gemstone to work with and why?

My favourite gemstone is the Blue Sapphire! Blue is my favourite colour and the sapphire comes in some many beautiful shades and hues. And it is the perfect choice for everyday wear.

Keyur - Head of Manufacturing and Sourcing

Tell us about yourself. Where do you live? What do you like doing in your spare time?

Hello, I am Keyur! I live in Mumbai with my mother, wife and son. I’m a bit of a workaholic but when I am not doing this I love travelling and taking short trips with my friends and family. I also love to watch comedy films and TV. Another passion is Cricket. I love playing this with my son and my wife (who is definitely much better at it than me)!

What is your role at Fenton and what does it involve?

I am the Head of Manufacturing and Sourcing at Fenton, and have been fortunate enough to be a part of growing the company from the beginning. This means that I oversee how and where we source all of our gemstones from, and the processes and timelines it takes to craft these into the finished Fenton rings. I am lucky to be able to work closely with our team here in India and Thailand, as well as with our concierge team based in London.

What does your work mean to you?

I love working at Fenton, particularly the variety within my role. I enjoy being a part of the journey of each of our rings, from ensuring the responsible and sustainable sourcing of every gemstone, through to ensuring every ring is crafted to exacting specifications to create the modern heirlooms which I know our customers will treasure for years to come. I also love being able to explore and visit our gemstone suppliers and mines, learning in detail where they are coming from and how they are being mine. Every gemstone is truly unique, which is so special.

What does a typical day for you look like?

It’s super busy but a really fun and enjoyable part of life for me. Making the best quality jewellery requires a lot of coordination between suppliers, workshops and the Fenton team. On a typical day I am sourcing the perfect gemstones such as sapphires, emeralds and rubies for our new customer order, tracking progress with our workshops and completing quality checks on the final rings before we export them to the team in London.

What is your favourite gemstone to work with and why?

It’s a tough choice, but either Aquamarine or Yellow Sapphire. The Aqua I love for its beautiful pale blue colour. Yellow is my favourite colour, so I’m also a huge fan of yellow sapphire - particularly high luster stones with a beautiful rich colour.

Lily - Head Concierge

Tell us about yourself. Where do you live? What do you like doing in your spare time?

Hey, I’m Lily. I currently live in East London with one of my friends. I always try to spend as much time as possible outdoors, and socialising with my friends and family. In my spare time, I also love to read and to travel (pre-covid). My favourite thing to do in London is to visit the Natural History Museum, home of the Mineral Rooms (home to over 2,000 minerals, rocks, meteorites, and gems) - in my humble opinion, the best room in London!

What is your role at Fenton and what does it involve?

I am the Head Concierge at Fenton. This means I am leading our expert concierge team here in London, helping our wonderful customers to choose their perfect modern heirlooms. As well as being heavily involved in the operations and logistics side of the business, working with our team in India to source the perfect gemstone, tracking delivery timelines, and quality assurance of the rings when they arrive here in London. I also spend time working across our functions with our web and marketing teams to create engaging gemological content to educate our community on the wonders of coloured gemstones!

What does your work mean to you?

There is still a lot of opacity surrounding the gemstone and fine jewellery industry. What’s important to me is ensuring our customers are able to create the perfect piece of jewellery for the best possible value, while also being transparent about how and where we source our gemstones, and how we create our jewellery. Our customers can always trust everything we do is done with kindness and respect for every person in our supply chain. Having worked in the industry for years I know how rare it still is to find a fine jewellery company like Fenton which is so open about every aspect of the product.

What does a typical day for you look like?

Busy! Our main focus is always the customer! Meaning working with customers to help choose the perfect ring for whichever occasion, and with colleagues and external partners to ensure we can provide the ring to the customer’s specifications, that it arrives on-time, and that their experience is easy and enjoyable.

What is your favourite gemstone to work with and why?

Yellow Sapphire! We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again - little drops of sunshine.
