Alex's Five Minutes with Fenton

Alex's Five Minutes with Fenton

We caught up with Alex Eagle to ask her five quick-fire questions about her engagement ring.

Alex Eagle is the creative director and retail entrepreneur who has mastered a luxury retail concept blending fashion, art and lifestyle. In 2014 she opened the Alex Eagle Studio in London, a space selling high-end fashion, art, design, beauty and homeware, while her concept shop, The Store X, has outposts in Soho House Berlin, Soho Farmhouse and 180 Studios.

We explored the story of Alex's ring, from its origin, to the design details that make it so special to her. She shares how this deeply personal ring reflects her love of mid-century style, and why it still feels just as right a decade on.

1. Tell us about your engagement ring
My engagement ring is actually a really old Victorian stone in a mid-century setting. It was bought for me by my husband in London about 10 years ago.

2. How did you get to the design?
He chose it. I actually had nothing to do with it.

3. What's your favourite thing about it?
What I love best about it is that it's such an old stone, as well as a very beautiful stone. I love mid-century architecture, design and furniture and a lot of inspiration for my work comes from that period. The fact he found a ring so fitting of that period is super special. It's both slightly industrial, yet minimal, very classic, very easy to wear. But it's also a really show-stopping beautiful diamond. I don't think I ever would have worn a really light classic on the nose diamond engagement ring. I do love the fact that this still feels like a ring I would wear if it hadn't been an engagement ring. It just happens to be platinum and diamond but the style is something that I'd wear if it was a different stone and a different material.

4. What advice would you give to someone designing their engagement ring?
I think it's a little bit like a wedding dress, don't start to just do something you feel is right because of the tone, because of the brief of what people think a wedding or an engagement ring should be like. Choose something that really is true to your own personal style, a design that you would wear or buy anyway, maybe something based on a piece that's sentimental to you but that you do find yourself wearing a lot and that's comfortable and easy to wear.
Don't be swayed by fashions or trends, or what other people deem an engagement ring style. Go with something that's true to your style and that you really feel like you will love 10, 20, 30 years later.

5. What's next on your jewellery wish list?
Your Solar Diamond Hoops from the Everyday Collection are fabulous.

HER ADVICE FOR ANYONE DESIGNING THEIR OWN RING?
_

"Stay true to your own personal style and don't follow trends or let others define what's 'right'."
