Fenton Emeralds

We source this iconic stone from Zambia. With a Mohs hardness scale of 7-7.5, emeralds can be worn daily but they are brittle and therefore should be worn with care. Every emerald has a unique set of inclusions, called a jardin, owing to their complex crystallisation process. No two emeralds will ever be the same, each with unique identity.

The Four C's

Cut

Unlike diamonds, coloured gemstones are cut by hand. This means they’ll never be perfectly symmetrical, but each stone cutter, or lapidary, will maximise a rough crystal to achieve its highest potential in size, colour and inclusion distributions. Different cuts will display different properties; emerald cuts are excellent to show body of colour, but will show more inclusions. Other more “faceted” cuts such as an oval or round are better at hiding inclusions and creating sparkle.

Colour

Colour should be evenly distributed across the stone. We look for excellent qualities of:
• Hue (the basic colour we see)
• Saturation (the intensity of the hue)
• Tone (the gemstones relative lightness or darkness)

Emeralds will often a yellow or blue undertone to highlight the green in a beautiful way.

Clarity

Emeralds are products of nature and capture millions of years of growth inside each stone. You could see characteristics such as growth lines, crystals or mirror-like tiny plates inside your emerald, displaying the natural beauty and uniqueness of the stone.

Carat

Weight is typically measured in metric carats, where five carats equal one gram. However, we focus on surface area instead, as gemstones can vary hugely in their proportions and depth. Providing the size using millimetres gives a more consistent depiction of the surface area of your gemstone, and how it will look in reality.

FAQs

What are Inclusions?

An inclusion is any material trapped inside a gemstone during its formation over thousands or millions of years. Emeralds boast a unique set of inclusions owing to their complex crystallisation process. Fenton Emeralds will exhibit wispy feather inclusions, mica platelets or other whitish inclusions - and no two Emeralds will ever be the same. Emeralds are, of course, green in colour, but some tend to have yellowish undertones, and others more blue. Fenton Emeralds are typically Zambian, which are a beautiful balance of life and rich colour.

Are Emeralds ok for everyday wear?

Their complex DNA results in the famed Emerald ‘Jardin’ - the unique set of inclusions found inside each Emerald stone. This is also why you must treat Emeralds with care, as their crystal structure means they are slightly more brittle than their Sapphire counterparts. They are fine for daily wear, but do require a little extra TLC. A bezel setting can be a good idea for those with an active lifestyle, to protect the gemstone within a metal frame.

Are Fenton emeralds heat treated?

Our Emeralds are naturally sourced and are not heat treated. They are simply treated with natural, colourless cedar-wood oil, which is an accepted industry practice.
