Yellow Diamonds or Yellow Sapphires, What’s the Difference?

Yellow Diamonds or Yellow Sapphires, What’s the Difference?

When searching for a vibrant yellow engagement ring, you’ll likely come across two options, Yellow Diamonds and Yellow Sapphires. While the classic White Diamond will always hold a special place in the world of engagement rings, more and more people are choosing the colour yellow for their forever ring, and with good reason.

Yellow engagement rings have long been coveted by women with a naturally bright aura, resonating with the colour's connotations to happiness and positivity. A modern take on the traditional White Diamond, yellow gemstones offer a bold alternative, perfect for those who want to stand out from the crowd.

Colour and Appearance

Like Solar Diamonds, our limited edition Yellow Solar Diamonds offer a radiant yellow sparkle. The pale yellow hue has the same brilliance and fire as naturally mined diamonds with the same captivating play of light we love. As with all diamonds, Yellow Solar Diamonds can have varying degrees of clarity, from flawless to included, with our collection offering GH/VS quality for premium radiance.

Yellow Sapphires, meanwhile, offer a softer glow. Their shades range from light, lemony tones to deeper golden hues, making them a beautiful option for those who love a more earthy radiance. High-quality Yellow Sapphires tend to be eye-clean, a gemological term meaning they have few to no visible inclusions.

Origin and Formation

Exclusive to Fenton, Yellow Solar Diamonds are lab grown with renewable solar energy. Unlike most of the worlds lab grown diamonds that use fossil fuels, this method produces diamonds that are chemically and physically identical to their naturally mined counterparts, with the same hardness (10 Mohs) and brilliance.

Growing the perfect Yellow Solar Diamond takes a lot of time and precision. The diamond is formed from carbon in a carefully controlled chamber, where nitrogen is added to create a vibrant yellow hue. Mimicking the natural formation process ensures you receive a certified real diamond that is conflict-free with a sustainable origin.

Yellow Sapphires are formed naturally within the earth and are found in regions such as Sri Lanka, Australia, and Thailand. Like all gemstones at Fenton, our Yellow Sapphires are responsibly sourced, ensuring your jewellery is not only beautiful but traceable as well.

Belonging to the corundum family, Yellow Sapphires' golden colour comes from trace amounts of iron within their chemical makeup. These iron atoms interact with the crystal lattice, absorbing wavelengths of light and reflecting others. The specific arrangement of iron atoms determines the depth of the yellow colour within the stone. For example, higher concentrations of iron result in a more intense yellow and this natural variation makes each Yellow Sapphire unique.

Symbolism and Meaning

Many couples choose their engagement ring based on the symbolism behind the gemstone. Whether it be your birthstone or special sentiment, let’s explore the meanings Yellow Solar Diamonds and Yellow Sapphires hold.
Many couples choose their engagement ring based on the symbolism behind the gemstone. Whether it be your birthstone or special sentiment, let’s explore the meanings Yellow Solar Diamonds and Yellow Sapphires hold.

The birthstone for April, diamonds have been coveted throughout history for their strength and beauty. The Ancient Greeks would wear diamonds in battle with the belief that the diamonds would make them unconquerable. Their symbol of invincibility derives from how resilient the stone is; a meaningful gesture for a token of everlasting love. With their environmentally friendly origins, Yellow Solar Diamonds symbolise sustainability, making them a great choice for eco-conscious couples.

In the ancient world, Yellow Sapphires were thought to empower and guide those wearing them to make right and just decisions. Traditionally associated with wisdom and protection Yellow Sapphies are the birthstone for September and a perfect gem for those looking to embrace positivity and success in their lives.

Durability and Care

When selecting an engagement ring, practicality is key, as you want it to withstand daily wear and maintain its sparkle for years to come. Luckily both Yellow Solar Diamonds and Yellow Sapphires are an excellent choice for an engagement ring, being incredibly durable and resilient gemstones.

To understand why these gemstones stand out, we can turn to the Mohs scale of hardness, established in 1812 by German mineralogist Friedrich Mohs. The scale serves as a standardised system for measuring the hardness of gemstones, with a rating of at least 7 being the general benchmark to endure everyday wear.

Yellow Solar Diamonds score a perfect 10 on the Mohs scale, making them the hardest and most scratch-resistant gemstone available. Yellow Sapphires come up close with a Mohs rating of 9, which is still very durable. Both are fantastic options for heirloom jewellery to last a lifetime and longer.

Top tip: No matter which gemstone you choose, maintaining its sparkle is easier than it looks. Follow our Ring Cleaning Guide to keep your piece looking as new as the day you got it.
