The History of Leap Year Proposals

2024 is a leap year, which carries with it a historic folklore which continues to this day. Originating in Ireland, the leap year tradition was born from the folklore tale about a deal that Saint Brigid struck with Saint Patrick.  In the 5th century, Saint Brigid is said to have gone to St. Patrick to complain that women had to wait too long to marry because men were slow to propose, asking that instead women be given the opportunity. St. Patrick offered that women be allowed to propose on one day every seven years, but St. Brigid convinced him to make it one day every four years. This was then adapted by neighbouring countries such as Scotland and England before  ultimately reaching the United States in 1860. However, it wasn’t until 2010 with the release of the film ‘Leap Year’ that gave the custom true universal recognition.
